Members of the 'Rise, Armenia' civil movement protesting against increasing electricity tariffs, are holding a sit-down protest in Republic Square in central Yerevan.

Organizers of the protest had announced the 72-hour event, demanding that Armenian president keep his promise to carry out an international audit of the power supply company Electric Networks of Armenia, CJSC. The other demand of protesters is to compensate for the tariffs' increase, starting from August 1.

"The goal of our protest is to inform the city residents that to date, we have seen no meaningful steps on the part of the government," representatives of the council of the civil movement said to the reporters.

The organizers hoped that during first 24 hours, the number of participants would be 30, reaching 60 in the next 24 hours, and 90 during the conclusive part of the protest.
