A Russian diplomat was expelled from Sweden after breaching the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the Swedish Foreign Ministry has said.
"This step [the diplomat's expulsion] was taken after it was established that this embassy employee had been caught carrying out activities that contravened the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations," a ministry spokesman told Interfax on Aug. 4.
He confirmed that "the Russian authorities have informed the [Swedish] Foreign Ministry that an employee of the Swedish Embassy in Moscow will have to leave the country as well."
"We understand that Russia views this as its response to the expulsion of an employee of the Russian Embassy in Stockholm, who has recently been asked to leave Sweden," the spokesman said.
A high-ranking source in the Russian Foreign Ministry told Interfax earlier that the Russian authorities had declared a Swedish diplomat persona non grata in response to Stockholm's unfriendly steps.
