An undersea fiber-optic communication line is planned to be laid between Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands as part of the federal targeted program of the economic development of the Kurils in the period until 2025.

The program approved by a government resolution says that the undersea line between Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Sakhalin), Kurilsk (Iturup), Yuzhnokurilsk (Kunashir) and Krabozavodskoye (Shikotan) will expand the capacity of communication channels, do away with traffic limits and enable connection of emergency situations, law enforcement and firefighting services.

The program says the project "can be implemented shortly" and be financed by off-budget sources and the federal budget.

Budget financing will be done in the form of subsidies to Rostelecom to partially compensate for its expenditures.
