Woman appointed official representative of Russian Foreign Ministry for the first time

"A new director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's information and press department was appointed on August 10, 2015. This is the first time a woman - Maria Zakharova, who was previously deputy head of the Russian Foreign Ministry's press service - has been appointed to the post of official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry," the Russian Foreign Ministry press service said in a report obtained by Interfax.

Zakharova graduated from the International Information Department of the Moscow State Institute for International Relations (MGIMO university) of the Russian Foreign Ministry with a degree in international journalism in 1998. She speaks English and Chinese and has a diplomatic rank of 1st class adviser.

After graduation, she went to work for the Russian Foreign Ministry. She worked as an editor of the monthly publication Diplomatic Bulletin and acting head of operative media monitoring in the information and press department. From 2005-2008, she was head of the press service of the permanent Russian representation at the UN in New York. From 2008-2011, she worked in different positions in the central administration of the ministry.

In 2011, she was appointed deputy director of the information and press department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Zakharova has a PhD in history and is a member of the Russian External and Defense Policy Council.

Among her predecessors are Vitaly Churkin, Sergei Yastrzhembsky, Grigory Karasin, and Alexander Yakovenko.

Zakharova is known for her participation in television talk shows ('Struktura Momenta' on Channel One, 'Vecher s Vladimirom Solovyovym' and 'Special Correspondent' on Rossiya-1, etc.).

During Zakharova's tenure as deputy director of the information and press department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Russian Foreign Ministry intensified its activities on various social networking sites. Specifically, the Russian Foreign Ministry opened accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and VKontakte.
