Friendly relations between Russia, Laos to promote expansion of cooperation — Putin

Laos will head the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year, and it’s very important for Russia in terms of expanding contacts, Russian president noted.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said it is necessary to use friendly relations between Russia and Laos for expanding economic cooperation.

"Our political dialogue is at a high level," Putin told President of Laos Choummaly Sayasone. "It has gained momentum, we should make use of this to expand economic relations." The Russian president also noted that his meeting with the leader of Laos was being held ahead of the 55th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Besides, Laos will head the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year, and it’s very important for Russia in terms of expanding contacts.

For his part, Choummaly Sayasone noted that the government of Laos intended to further develop friendly relations with Russia using the experience accumulated in the past. In particular, he identified the priority areas - these are investment, communications, education, tourism, as well as cooperation in the military and military-technical areas.
