"The government of the Murmansk region announced at 3 p.m. that an explosion preliminarily identified as that caused by methane went off at the Karnasurd coal mine of the Lovozersky mining and concentrating mill," the statement said.

Information about those injured and facilities destroyed is being verified, the regional emergencies center said.

There is neither destruction nor fire in the coal mine itself, the Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations for the Murmansk region said.

The causes and details of the incident are being investigated.
