Moldovan parliament confirms National Bank head resigns under pressure

Moldovan Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu confirmed President of the Moldovan National Bank Dorin Dragutanu's words about the pressure he is experiencing from several politicians.

Moldovan Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu confirmed President of the Moldovan National Bank Dorin Dragutanu's words about the pressure he is experiencing from several politicians.

Candu told PublikaTV television that Dragutanu had been speaking with him about this issue back in the beginning of summer, when Kirill Gaburich's government resigned.

"Dragutanu said that the Moldovan National Bank comes under pressure from the parliament through some amendments to the legislation. This concerned the independence of the Moldovan National Bank and the appointment and dismissal of the state agency's leadership that causes serious pressure on the whole banking system," the speaker said.

He said that the opposition had already exerted some pressure, as its initiatives "have received a positive conclusion by the state chancellery in some strange way."

The speaker also acknowledged that his colleagues in the ruling alliance had also criticized Dragutanu, demanding his dismissal without thinking about some consequences.

It is planned that the parliament will consider a request for resignation from the Moldovan National Bank president within three months, when it will have an assessment on the activity of the National Bank leadership when $1 billion was stolen from the country's banking system.
