Russian, Syrian foreign ministers call for soonest launching of political process in Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Syrian counterpart Walid Muallem called for the soonest launching of the political process in Syria at a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

"At the same time the ministers noted the high necessity of efforts aimed at the soonest launching of the negotiating process between the Syrian government and the opposition without preliminary conditions and external interference on the basis of the Geneva communique as of July 30, 2012," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

The two ministers met on September 30.
