The number of migrants heading to European Union countries may reach one million this year, Russian Armed Forces General Staff Chief and First Deputy Defense Minister Gen. Valery Gerasimov has said.

"The European Union has now made a decision to distribute some 150,000 migrants among European states. However, the actual flow of refugees is far bigger. Certain reports indicate that already this year, up to one million people may travel to countries of the continent seeking asylum. There are lots of natives of Afghanistan among them," Gerasimov said opening an international conference on Afghanistan on Oct. 8.

Up to 8,000 people apply to the Afghan authorities for foreign passports every day, he said.

"The reason behind this is the extremist ideology that is being violently imposed on the population, continuing terrorist attacks and the low standards of living," he added.
