The Russian and United States defense ministries will soon sign a memorandum on flight safety in Syria, Col. Gen. Andrei Kartapolov, head of the Main Operations Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff, said on Oct. 16.

"All technical matters have already been agreed upon, with Russian and U.S. lawyers now crosschecking the text of the document. We hope this document will be signed in the very near future," Kartapolov said at a briefing for military attaches and journalists.

There has already been a third video conference with the U.S., concerning the drafting of the memorandum between the two defense ministries on the prevention of incidents and flight safety in the sky over Syria, the general said.

"This will allow to prevent concrete situations which could create an incident in the Syrian airspace during air operations of the Russian Federation and coalition partners. We are calling for a broader cooperation in this area and open to contacts with all parties concerned," Kartapolov added.
