Syrian President Bashar al-Assad thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for his assistance in the fight against terrorists.

"First of all, I would like to express profound gratitude to the entire administration of the Russian Federation and the Russian people for the assistance they have been rendering to Syria. We are grateful for their backing of Syria's unity and independence. Most importantly, all this is being done within the framework of international laws," the Kremlin press service has quoted al-Assad as saying at the meeting with Putin.

"The political steps the Russian Federation has taken since the beginning of the crisis were the primary reason that prevented the development of Syrian events into a more tragic scenario," he said.

"The terrorism which has spread in the region would have occupied a much bigger space and would have spread into much bigger territories if not for your actions and your decisions. These steps have been supported by your involvement in the hostilities within a single anti-terrorism front," the Syrian president said.

"Any military action implies prospective political steps," he said.

"Definitely our common objective should be what the Syrian people want to see in the future of their country," al-Assad said.

"It must be emphasized that strikes against terrorism are necessary primarily from the point of view of the need to fight against terrorism; besides, terrorism is a real impediment to political settlement. Definitely, the entire people, not just senior officials, want to take part in making a decision about the future of their country," al-Assad said.

He once again thanked the Russian people "for the assistance they have been giving to our country" and said he "would like to express hope that we will be victorious in the fight against terrorism and will continue to act together for the restoration of the country from the economic point of view, the political point of view and the point of view of everyone's peaceful coexistence."
