Ministry: Washington pressing Baghdad on possible Russian operation in Iraq

Russia has not received any official requests on this account from Iraq, Zakharova said

Moscow is surprised by Washington's position regarding the possibility that Iraq may ask Russia to send its Aerospace Forces to this country to conduct an antiterrorist operation there, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

"We are closely following, not without interest, the U.S. position, which, to put it mildly, is influencing Baghdad on the matter," Zakharova said at a news briefing in Moscow on Oct. 29.

Russia has not received any official requests on this account from Iraq, she said.

"Surely, I cannot but say that the situation surrounding these unending statements from Washington regarding what I see as a sovereign decision by a sovereign country is bound to cause perplexity," Zakharova said.
