Ministry: Russian involvement in anti-terrorism operation not being negotiated with Iraq

No formal request to this effect has been made, Russian Foreign Ministry said

Russia is not negotiating its involvement in the anti-terrorism operation in the territory of Iraq with the Iraqi authorities, and no formal request to this effect has been made, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

"There is a strict rule: there must be some formal request. No such requests have been made. The rest is polemics ongoing in the country that definitely has the right to exist, because this is an essential matter to Iraq, this is a matter of paramount importance," Zakharova said at a press briefing in Moscow.

Moscow sees the issue "as debates held in that country," she said. "No negotiations to this effect are being held, because this is not a subject of negotiations but the question of an internal decision, a decision of Iraq as a state," the ministry spokesperson said.
