Russian Railways OJSC (RZD) and India may sign a memorandum of cooperation in December 2015. TASS learned this from the Russian trade representative in India Yaroslav Tarasyuk. According to him, Russian Railways is considering participation in the comprehensive development of new, dedicated transport corridors in India.
“This year, an interdisciplinary Russian Railways delegation – headed by the first vice-president of RZD Alexander Misharin – visited India. In furtherance of this visit, work is now being carried out on the preparation of a memorandum, to identify those areas where cooperation is possible. The Indian representatives are interested in modern rolling stock and increasing the speed of their trains. I hope that a finalized memorandum will be signed during the Russian-Indian Summit in December 2015,” he said.
At the RZD, they have confirmed that now they are working on preparing a memorandum of understanding between the Russian Railways and the Ministry of Railways of India.
Earlier, the Vice President of Russian Railways, Alexander Saltanov, reported that his company, as part of an international consortium, is planning to build and electrify 400 kilometers of railway tracks in India.
According to Mr. Misharin, promising areas of cooperation with India also include designing and building high-speed lines, upgrading existing sections of the Indian Railways to increase train speeds to 160-200 km/h, the supply, manufacture and repair of locomotives, rolling stock and railway equipment, as well as the modernization of railway stations.
