Ministry: Turkish Air Force attack on Russian Su-24 seen as unfriendly act

Military attache at the Turkish Embassy summoned by the Defense Ministry

The military attache at the Turkish Embassy to Russia on Nov. 24 was urgently summoned by the Russian Defense Ministry which declared its official protest against the actions of the Turkish Air Force.

Below is an excerpt from this document provided by the Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson:

"Today, at 9.30 a.m., a Russian aircraft, which had been on a counter-terrorist mission, was shot down by a Turkish Air Force aircraft.

The Russian aircraft did not cross into Turkey and operated exclusively against the targets on Syrian territory.

The Russian aviation was conducting military operations against illegal terrorist formations that include a large number of militants from Russia's North Caucasus.

Attempts by Russian defense specialists to organize emergency communication with Turkey were unsuccessful.

We see the actions of the Turkish Air Force as an unfriendly act.

The Russian Defense Ministry is now devising a set of measures on how to respond to such incidents.

Military operations against terrorists in Syria will continue."
