Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari have spoken by telephone at the latter's request, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said.
"The Iraqi minister informed him of the developments around the unlawful introduction of Turkish troops in northern Iraq and Bagdad's complaint to the UN Security Council over his issue. The Russian side expressed its firm principled position in support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq, as well as steps being taken by the Iraqi authorities in this respect in accordance with international law and the UN Charter," the ministry said on its website.
"When discussing the Syrian problem, Lavrov and al-Jafaari called for continuation of the collective work in the format of the International Syria Support Group with participation of all its members without exception as an optimal and efficient mechanism of external assistance in the efforts to establish a sustained negotiating process between the Syrian government and the Syrian opposition on the basis of the Geneva communique of June 30, 2012," the statement said.
