Russia ready for military cooperation with France in fight against terror

Russian Armed Forces General Staff meets with his French counterpart

The Russian military is ready to join efforts with their French counterparts in the fight against international terrorism, the chief of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff, Army Gen. Valery Gerasimov said at a meeting with his French counterpart Army Gen. Pierre de Villiers.

"I would like to stress that we are just as ready for cooperation with the French defense ministry as our partners are," he said.

"After the terrorist attack on Paris the Russian president instructed us to work with the French military as allies. We were allies with you in the fight against fascism and must be allies in the fight against terrorists as well," Gerasimov said.

He suggested that he and his French counterpart exchange views on the current situation in Syria. "For our part, we will tell you about the results of the air operation of the Russian Aerospace Force's aviation in Syria, and share our vision of the prospects for further developments in that country," said the Russian chief of the general staff.

"Not much time has passed since your first visit to Moscow, but changes in the global and regional security have been significant. International terrorism, which was seen as a potential threat three years ago, has unfortunately affected many countries," Gerasimov said.
