Russian Olympic Committee President Alexander Zhukov has lauded the performance of Russian athletes in 2015.
"The outgoing year 2015 has been rather successful for Russian athletes. The first-ever European Games were held this year - the largest competitions supervised by the European Olympic Committee. Our athletes performed remarkably and ranked first, well ahead of the other contestants [they won 79 gold, 40 silver and 45 bronze medals]," Zhukov said in a video address published on the Russian Olympic Committee's website on Dec. 30.
"There were lots of other achievements this year. Russia hosted major events, such as the World Aquatic Championship in which our athletes were not bad either [they won 9 medals, four silver and four bronze medals]," he said.
The Russian Olympic Committee president also praised the performance of young Olympic Games participants.
"Our young athletes performed well in Olympic European festivals [Russia won six gold, six silver and four bronze medals in the European Youth Olympic Festival in winter and 17 gold, nine silver and 11 bronze medals in the European Youth Olympic Festival in summer]. They were successful as a rule and won team events," Zhukov said.
The Russian Olympic Committee president is hopeful that Russians will perform well in the qualifications for the Olympic Games in Brazil and will be successful in Rio.
"The upcoming year 2016 is an Olympic year. The summer games due in Rio-de-Janeiro [on August 5-21] are definitely an event of the year to which our fans are looking forward and for which our athletes are preparing. A rather large number of Olympic licenses have been won, yet there are still numerous qualification competitions planned in the period from the beginning of the year until summer. I very much hope that Russia will be represented in most sporting events at the Rio Games. I would like to wish success to our athletes in qualification competitions and, naturally, in Rio," Zhukov said.
