Abbas backs Russia's actions in Syria, says Russian official

Abbas also spoke in favor of stepping up the fight against ISIS

Palestine supports Russia's operation in Syria, Russian Federation Council Chairperson Valentina Matviyenko said after meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

"During our negotiations with Palestinian President Abbas, he unambiguously and firmly supported Russia's actions in Syria. He said the fact that Russia has returned to the Middle East creates a certain balance, and this won't allow any imbalances," Matviyenko said in an interview shown on the Rossiya-24 (VGTRK) television channel.

Abbas also spoke in favor of stepping up the fight against ISIS, a terrorist organization banned in Russia, and other international terrorist organizations, she said.

"We have no disagreement in this sense," she said.

A Federation Council delegation led by Matviyenko visited Israel and Palestine on February 2-4. Matviyenko had meetings with the Israeli and Palestinian leaders on Thursday.
