The Russian embassy to Nigeria so far cannot confirm reports that a Russian citizen is on board an oil tanker seized in the Gulf of Guinea.
"There has been little new information over the past 24 hours. Both the location of the hostages and the hostage-takers' demands are still being verified," Artyom Romanov, a spokesman for the Russian embassy, told Interfax on Saturday.
Media had reported earlier that an armed group in Nigeria had seized an oil tanker operated by a crew including citizens of Russia, Georgia, and the Philippines. Some reports said five people may have been taken hostage. The vessel reportedly belongs to a Greek company.
