Patriarch Kirill meets with Fidel Castro in Havana

Castro points out importance of meeting between Patriarch and Pope Francis

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia met with Fidel Castro in Havana on Feb. 13, 2016.

"The meeting addressed issues relating to international relations. Fidel Castro pointed out the importance of his meeting with the pope on Saturday," priest Alexander Volkov, the head of the patriarch's press service, told reporters in Havana.

The meeting, which took place in Fidel Castro's house, lasted over an hour. The patriarch thanked Castro for the fact that the Orthodox community of Cuba has had its own church for many years.

"Fidel Castro played a role in the possibility of building a church in Havana," the priest said.

After the meeting with Castro, the patriarch visited a concert of the Moscow clergy choir and the state academic ensemble Russia in Havana.
