FSB: Naval officer sentenced to 13 years for spying for Lithuania

Kaliningrad court founds Russian citizen Mataitis guilty of high treason

The Kaliningrad Regional Court has found Russian citizen Capt. 3rd Rank (Reserve) Yevgeny Mataitis guilty of high treason in the form of espionage, the Federal Security Service has reported.

"The court has sentenced Mataitis to 13 years in a maximum-security penitentiary and a fine of 200,000 rubles and deprived him of the military rank," the FSB public relations center told Interfax on  April 13.

It has been established that Mataitis engaged in covert cooperation with the Lithuanian National Defense Ministry's second operative services department in 2009 and agreed to supply information about the Russian Armed Forces for a reward on a monthly basis.

"On the orders of Lithuanian military intelligence, Mataitis spent six years collecting military data, including state secrets, and transferring it abroad," the FSB public relations center said.

Mataitis pleaded guilty at the trial and confirmed his recruitment and his collection and transfer of state secrets to a foreign security service.
