A military grouping on the Western strategic direction will be reinforced before the end of 2016, with three new motorized rifle divisions, with bases presumably in Yelnya (Smolensk region) and the Voronezh and Rostov regions, an informed source told Interfax-AVN on May 4.
"Three divisions are being formed around existing brigades. The new formations must be formed by December 1, when the Armed Forces begin a winter training period," the source said.
The new formations will have their staff based in Yelnya, and the Voronezh and Rostov regions, he said.
The formation of three new divisions on the Western strategic direction was for the first time announced by Russian Defense Minister Army Gen. Sergei Shoigu at a meeting with senior defense officials on January 14.
On May 4, the minister said that two of the new divisions will be formed in the Western Military District and one in the Southern Military District "to counter NATO military build-up" near the Russian borders.
