AK-74, AK-74M to be main weapons of Russian National Guard - source

The Kalashnikov assault rifles AK-74 and AK-74M will be the primary service weapons of the Russian National Guard, a source from the central command of the new agency told Interfax on May 11.

"The AK-74 and AK-74M are the service weapons of units of the Interior Ministry Forces, which are the backbone of the National Guard. These rifles will remain in use. Special operations units are also armed with other types of special weapons," the source said.

According to open sources, special operations units of the Interior Ministry Forces attached to the National Guard are armed with AS 'Val' submachine guns for silent and flameless fire at a range of up to 400 meters.

The same open sources say that the National Guard is armed with handguns, submachine guns, machine guns, sniper rifles, weapons against underwater sabotage forces and non-lethal weapons.

The formation of the Russian National Guard on the basis of the Interior Ministry Forces was announced on April 5. Gen. of the Army Viktor Zolotov heads the National Guard.

According to open sources, the Interior Ministry Forces employ 170,000 persons.
