St. Petersburg police officials arrested two men who had organized an illegal migration channel used by a total of 2,000 migrants from Arab countries.
"The officials of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Main Department of the Russian Interior Ministry arrested two individuals implicated in assisting third-country nationals in crossing the Russian border and registering more than 2,000 migrants," the press service of the Main Department of the Russian Interior Ministry for the Leningrad region said on May 27.
A criminal case under the Article 'Organization of illegal migration' of the Russian Criminal Code was opened upon the established facts. An investigation of the detailed circumstances of the defendants' operations is underway. The men have been arrested.
The individuals whom the defendants had been registering illegally were migrants from Arab countries, a source in law enforcement structures told Interfax.
