Diana SerebrennikovaThe Russian Defense Ministry and the Russian Geographical Society have begun engineering works to reconstruct an airfield on the uninhabited volcanic island of Matua on the Kuril archipelago, the Eastern Military District staff said.
"The airfield's drainage system has been cleaned, and a pad for landing of all types of helicopters has been prepared," the Eastern Military District press service said in a report seen by Interfax-AVN on June 1.
The airfield has two concrete and asphalt runways with a length exceeding 1,200 meters and a width of 80 meters, the report said.
