The West and Russia should try avoiding escalation, Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in an interview with Bild am Sonntag published on July 17.
"My opinion is in the relations with Russia we have approached a benchmark: we should manage preventing a new arms race and a new cold war," he said. Both Russia and NATO should realize the responsibility and should prevent new "chain reactions." Otherwise, the situation will be outside control, Steinmeier said.
The foreign minister once again reiterated his position regarding the anti-Russian sanctions. Nobody is interested in having the limitation measures for ever. Gradual lifting of the sanctions may be possible only in case of "significant steps forward" in settlement of the situation in Ukraine, he said.
