EOC supports IOC decision on Russian athletes

The IOC executive committee decided not to ban the Russian team.

The European Olympic Committees (EOC) said on Sunday it supports today’s decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Russia’s participation in the Rio 2016 Olympics.

On Sunday, the International Olympic Committee held a meeting of its executive board to discuss possible blanket ban of Russian athletes at the Rio Olympics. The IOC executive committee decided not to ban the Russian team. Individual decisions on Russian athletes have been referred to relevant international federations. Apart from that, the IOC ruled than no Russian athlete who has ever been sanctioned for doping will be allowed to take part in the Rio Olympics, even if he or she has served the sanction.

"The European Olympic Committees (EOC) completely supports today’s decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to enable the participation of clean Russian athletes at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, just days away," EOC President Patrick Hickey said in a statement. "The ROC’s (Russian Olympic Committee) commitment to ensuring Russia fields teams of clean athletes now and in the future is welcome. The EOC stands ready to provide the ROC with every assistance in this regard, with EOC members already at the forefront of the fight for clean sport."

The summer Olympic Games will be held in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro from August 5 through 21, 2016.
