Moscow City Hall’s IT department has developed a mobile app offering users an alternative along the lines of Pokemon Go, with the ability to take selfies with 3D images of famous people, the capital’s municipal administration said on Monday.

Among the renowned individuals users will be able to take pictures with are the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, Russia’s illustrious poet, Alexander Pushkin, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, prominent 18th century scientist, Mikhail Lomonosov, Soviet rock star, Viktor Tsoi and even Napoleon.

"The virtual characters will be geotagged, so as soon as a user is 50 meters away from a tagged location, a character will pop up on users’ smartphone cameras using the uploaded app," the city hall spokesman said.

This new application will be available on AppStore and Play Market in late August, he added.

City Hall wants to use the popular augmented reality technology to attract interest in Moscow’s rich cultural heritage and encourage Muscovites to walk more around the city, the spokesman said.
