Putin arrives in Goa to attend BRICS summit, hold talks

Russian President plans to hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi before the BRICS summit in Goa on October 15-16

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in India’s Goa state where he plans to hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that the meeting of the two leaders will take place shortly before the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit in Goa on October 15-16.

The leaders are expected to have a conversation in the narrow format, and then the talks will continue as part of delegations. Russia will also be represented there by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, the industry and trade, energy, economic development ministers, the head of the Rosatom state nuclear corporation and other officials.

After talks the leaders will take part (in the mode of a video conference) in the ceremony to lay the foundation stones of the third and fourth units of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. Putin and Modi will also make statements for the press and hold a tete-a-tete lunch.

As regards topics for the leaders’ discussion, Ushakov named among them, along with the bilateral agenda, the situation in Syria, Afghanistan and other countries, as well as the fight against terrorism. Besides, cooperation in the nuclear power sphere and military-technical cooperation will be also discussed.

A considerable package of documents has been drafted for signing after the talks. In particular, Russia and India will ink an agreement on supplies of Russia’s S-400 Triumf long-range air defense missile system (NATO reporting name SA-21 Growler).

Besides, Putin and Modi will adopt a joint statement following the talks, which will reflect common approaches solving various issues of the global and regional agenda.

The sides will also approve a roadmap timed for the 70th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. A total of 18 documents are expected to be signed.

On Saturday evening after talks with Modi Putin will take part in an informal dinner, the first event of the BRICS summit.
