Russia’s first lung transplant surgery on a youngster was completed successfully and the patient is feeling well, Russian Minister of Health Veronika Skvortsova said on Monday.
The surgery was performed 25 days ago at the Moscow-based Shumakov Federal Research Center of Transplantation and Artificial Organs. The patient, a 13-year-old girl with cystic fibrosis received donor lungs and was able to breathe on her own 18 hours following the surgery, the Center’s Director and Russia’s Chief Transplantation Doctor, Sergey Gautier, said.
"I would like to congratulate the Center’s specialists on Russia’s first lung transplant surgery performed on a child. There have been only ten such operations in the world," Skvortsova highlighted, while visiting the Center. "The girl already practices outdoors hiking, has a set workload for physical activity."
