Moscow State University has launched its first-ever affiliation in Europe. It's based on the premises of the University of Primorska in Koper, Slovenia.

An agreement on cooperation between the two universities and on the setting up of a joint research center was signed by Moscow State University rector Viktor Sadovnichy and the University of Primorska rector, Dragan Marusic.

"We plan to develop further the already existing cooperation between our universities," Sadovnichy told a news conference. "We’re pondering a system of exchange of study programs and students and the issuance of dual graduation certificates, which I hope will draw the attention of Slovene and other European students."

The first joint study plans will be open for enrollment as of the beginning of next year and they will embrace economics, management, mathematics, and information technologies.

"At the initial stage, cooperation in sciences and especially in high technologies is a priority for us," Sadovnichy said. "We’ll make emphasis on the development of new materials based on nanotechnologies for the manufacturing sector in both countries."

IT poses a big challenge to all countries, he said, adding: "Information security, creation of large databases and supercomuting are the spheres where Moscow State University has accumulated huge experience."

"I’m confident we’ll be able to streamline cooperation in these spheres," Dr. Sadovnichy said.

Marusic said on his part the signing of an agreement on cooperation with Moscow State University was a particular event in the current history of the University of Primorska. He indicated that the huge experience gained by Russian scientists was extremely important for their Slovene counterparts and for the promotion of bilateral relations in general.
