Russia expects the United States to specify the initiative of creating safe zones in Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Feb. 22.

"We touched upon this theme during my meeting with [U.S. Secretary of State] Rex Tillerson in Bonn on Feb. 16," the minister said.

"The American side said work on this concept is currently under way," Lavrov said.

"We’ll wait for additional specifications," Russia’s top diplomat said.

U.S. President Donald Trump earlier stated the intention to create so-called humanitarian zones in Syria to protect civilians. He instructed the U.S. Department of State and the Pentagon to prepare a plan of implementing this idea.
