The incidence of the flu and acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI) in Moscow is estimated to have reached the level of an epidemic, according to Yelena Andreyeva, the chief state sanitary doctor in Moscow.
The incidence rate exceeded the calculated epidemic threshold by 37.8 percent, according to the document signed by Andreyeva on January 25. Approximately 61 percent of cases are among children.
The decree noted that from Jan. 18-24 the incidence of the flu and ARVI increased 1.5 times compared to the previous week. The number of patients with moderate and severe forms of flu that requires treatment in a hospital has also increased, says the doctor.
The statement released by Andreyeva specifies the imposition of quarantine for flu and ARVI in organizations and facilities in Moscow from January 26 until further notice.
Earlier the Moscow branch of the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights (Rospotrebnadzor) announced that the epidemic threshold for the flu and ARVI was exceeded by 47 percent in the Moscow Region. More than 64,000 people received a diagnosis for the flu or ARVI last week alone and 41 patients became infected with the swine flu virus.
