The Long Range Aviation branch, along with Military Transport, Tactical and Army Aviation branches, is a part of the Russian Air Force. It is designed to implement strategic and operational tasks in the theatre of war.
Among its main tasks are reducing the enemy’s military-economic potential and the destruction of important facilities, military bases, airfields and ports.
The aircraft fleet is composed of the Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic missile carriers, Tu-22M3 long-distance missile-bombers, Il-78 air refueling tankers and TU-22MR reconnaissance aircraft.
The Long Range Aviation branch can also be tasked with long-range bombardment of strategic targets with nuclear weapons.
