Khakassia (Republic)

Khakassia (Republic)

Khakassia is a very ancient land. Here, scientists have found fossils associated with Stone Age man! It was also the first state of southern Siberia, even before our era.

Khakassia became part of Russia in the 17th century, with the capital of the Republic becoming the city of Abakan. Khakasses are Turkic nomadic people who historically lived on these lands. One of the main holidays of the locals is Tun payram, which is translated from Khakassia as “the feast of the first ayran”. It also marks the time of cattle migration from the winter road and the end of spring field work.

On the Yenisei River you can find one of the main “attractions” of the republic - the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP, the largest in Russia in terms of capacity.
