How come – the city is called St. Petersburg, but the region around – Leningrad Region? In the 1990s, when St. Petersburg got back its historical name, the inhabitants of Leningrad Region voted to keep its Soviet name.

At the same time, the main attractions of the region are palaces and castles. The former residence of the Romanovs in Gatchina, the Oreshek fortress in Shlisselburg, the medieval castle in Vyborg.
