Sverdlovsk Region

The region is Sverdlovsk and the capital is Yekaterinburg. One of the rare cases where, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the city was renamed, but the region was not. Yekaterinburg is a major road, rail and air hub of the Urals and the largest city at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. The region is rich in natural resources and is especially famous for metals (iron, gold, platinum), minerals, marble and coal. Urals steel was used in the construction of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Urals copper was used for the Statue of Liberty in New York.

In addition, Yekaterinburg is famous for its constructivist architecture. It may even have more Soviet-style buildings than Moscow! In the Uralmash district, which formed around the eponymous factory in the 1920s, the intention was to build a utopia city, a completely self-sufficient space with everything necessary for life, work and leisure.

And Yekaterinburg is also one of seven cities in Russia with a subway.
