Vasily "Basta" Vakulenko was born in 1980 in Rostov-on-Don. Recalling his childhood, Basta says that home life had no particular hold on him. His parents were divorced and lived their own lives. The future rapper was brought up by his grandmother, who packed him off to music school with the words: "Suffer a bit, learn how to play, and it will be worth it in the end." A fine example that elders do sometimes know what they're talking about.
Basta's passion was hip-hop, although at that age (16-17) he listened to many kinds of music: Rhymes, Busta, Ol’dirty Bastard, Wu-tanc clan, and other hip-hop idols. Basta's life in music began at the age of 17 with his first track, which was called "City." Speaking about his musical preferences, the artist says he loves music that is direct and honest.
At 18, Basta wrote his most popular song, which became a favorite not only in his home town, but across the whole of southern Russia. Entitled "My Game," it marked the start of Basta's career as a musician. He began touring in southern Russia — his native Rostov-on-Don, the Black Sea coast, and the cities of the northern Caucasus and Krasnodarsk Krai.
Today, Basta is one of the most famous hip-hop artists in Russia.
Lyrics:
The wind seems to be blowing there
And somewhere the fall is calling me
My stone city is blazing with light
And there stands Moscow, forever talking about you
Chorus:
I really need you really love you,
And however far away I am from you
I really need you really love you,
I know you're with me, for you I'm family, oh mama, mama
Fallen leaves line the asphalt with gold,
The scent of autumnal smoke for me is like a mother,
For a long time I never wanted to leave you,
Yes, mama, I know you wanted to embrace your son.
Chorus:
I really need you really love you,
And however far away I am from you
I really need you really love you,
I know you're with me, for you I'm family, oh mama, mama
