Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery

Vologda Region

Vologda Region

What do we know about Vologda, apart from the fact that delicious butter is made there and that they have pretty houses with carved palisades?

For example, the region has the largest monastery in the world! That’s right - the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery, founded in 1397. And not far from there is the Ferapontov monastery, while the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin dazzles with 16th century Dionisius frescos.

Vologda is also the capital of lace. It’s woven on special wooden bobbins - koklyushki. They make handkerchiefs, tablecloths, gloves and other beautiful things. In Soviet times, even portraits of leaders were woven from lace.
