Produce old Russian salt

Novgorod Region

Would you please pass the salt! In the Novgorod region, you can not only relax in nature or in a sanatorium, but also travel back to the real Russian Middle Ages for a couple of hours.

Anyone wishing to do that will be kindly welcomed by the family of a salt-worker at the ‘Manor of the Medieval Rushanin’ in the town of Staraya Russa. You’ll not only discover that traditional Russian salt has a completely different taste, but also observe the owner of the estate at work.

Who knows, he might even turn to you for help…

Old Russian salt, made using evaporation, is very hygroscopic: it instantly absorbs moisture from the air, so, the purchased souvenir should be stored in an airtight container and maybe add a few grains of rice, which remove excess moisture - this way, your salt shaker will definitely not clog up. Enjoy your meal!

How to evaporate salt?

🚌 You can get to Staraya Russa from Veliky Novgorod by bus (every 1-3 hours) or about 100 km by car, which will take less than 90 minutes.

🧔🏼 The saltworker and his family will be happy to welcome you with an excursion program on weekdays from 11:00 to 18:30 and on weekends from 10:00 to 18:30.

🧂 And don’t forget to buy some old Russian salt to take home with you!
